THE ACADEMIC senate of the University of Alexander Dubček in Trenčín (TnUAD) approved a proposal to recall Rector Miroslav Mečár on December 7. Dušan Holý, who was elected at that meeting to preside over the academic senate, said that 14 of 17 senate members present supported Mečár’s dismissal from his post, the SITA newswire wrote.
Holý did not specify the reasons for the rector’s recall. Slovak media have reported in recent weeks that TnUAD has issued so-called express diplomas and has unlawfully collected tuition fees from students. The Education Ministry is presently conducting an audit which has reportedly found several cases of misconduct.
President Ivan Gašparovič must approve the recall vote taken by the academic senate before it becomes valid.
Mečár filed a court complaint on December 8 to contest the validity of his recall and of the meeting of the academic senate itself, citing factual and procedural reasons. According to Mečár, principles of the law regarding universities were breached. He also claimed that the meeting was chaired by a person with a criminal past.
