Vážny agreed to meet UNAS representatives after receiving a letter stating the demands of the disgruntled truckers last week, reads the letter from the ministry, according to TASR. The transport minister is currently in Vietnam where he is accompanying Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška on an official visit that will last until January 31.

UNAS has called on the Transport Ministry to mothball the collection of road tolls until the end of April 2010 and to amend the system of toll collection so that truckers will only pay for fully-traversed sections of tolled motorways and other roads.

UNAS has said it members are ready to begin an indefinite protest on Monday, February 1, that will only be halted if their demands are met.

Vážny said some truckers are trying to prevent any form of toll collection on Slovakia's roads. The minister added that negotiations with UNAS are continuing and that only time will tell how they will be concluded. TASR
