TUESDAY’s session of parliament will show whether the government of Mikuláš Dzurinda will be able to survive its electoral term, the daily SME reported.
Politicians were still uncertain if parliament would open today. However, the ruling coalition did manage to gain the support of two HZDS deputies, Eduard Kolesár and Karol Džupa.
The two signed an agreement to cooperate with the rebel ANO faction centred around Ľubomir Lintner and Jirko Malchárek. HZDS deputy chairman Viliam Veteška said he could not explain the real reason for the two HZDS deputies’ decision.
The ruling coalition would gain another vote if Foreign Affairs Minister Eduard Kukan returns to the parliament as an SDKÚ deputy. Kukan was replaced by Jozef Hurban after he was nominated to his ministerial post.
However, Hurban left the SDKÚ and became a member of the Free Forum. Kukan would most probably join parliament only for a very brief time and after that return to the cabinet.
In reaction to the speculation Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda responded by saying simply that "people talk about many things".
Independent deputy Ivan Šimko said that he did not intend to vote in parliament on Tuesday morning, despite the ruling coalition needing Šimko’s vote to meet the necessary quorum in parliament. Šimko did say, however, that he might vote in the afternoon.
