Slovak police are investigating the theft of property from the U.S. Steel plant in Košice. The case involves 25 suspects, all of whom, except for two, are employees of the plant.
The investigation, which was opened last summer, uncovered theft in U.S. Steel’s electric power distribution company, Distribúcia elektrickej energie DZ Energetika. One of its employees, along with several accomplices, hid in the facility items stolen from U.S. Steel and smuggled them out of the plant later. The employee, identified as Ladislav K., together with other accomplices, stole various instruments, devices and materials worth about €10,000 total. Out of 34 people investigated, 25 were charged, Korzár wrote on Wednesday, June 26.
All but one of the employees who were charged filed a complaint against the use of security cameras - which recorded them stealing the items – without their consent. The prosecutor of the Košice II District Prosecutor’s Office refused their complaint, however, arguing that a license issued by Košice police authorised U.S. Steel security guards to monitor the premises with the cameras.
Most of those accused face up to three years in prison.
