A TINY village near Bánovce nad Bebravou is looking to add a message of modernity to its name.
Its inhabitants have agreed to rename the village Digitálne Uhrovské Podhradie in thanks to an anonymous businessman who paid for satellite dishes to be installed in all the village’s households for a token sum.
All permanent households in the village now receive high-quality digital TV service, the Pravda daily wrote. The village has only 38 permanent residents and many of the 90 houses have been turned into weekend houses.
“We are happy to have it,” said Anastázia Duranziová, a local resident. “I don’t mind at all if the name of the village changes. Why should I? It should be changed to show gratitude that something like this has happened. We all have digital TV now.”
There is no mobile phone signal in Uhrovské Podhradie, and people used to have poor television reception, until the satellite service was installed. All inhabitants are excited about the good-quality broadcasts, especially sports fans, who enjoy watching the new STV3 sports channel, which broadcast the Olympics.
“The reception is wonderful, with splendid colours, and there are so many programmes to choose from,” pensioner Viera Myšáková said. “My whole family has been happy.”
Mayor Dušan Duranzia plans to ask authorities to make the change official. He admits that several complications could occur, such as having to issue new documents and ID cards, but he believes the new name will attract tourists.
