THE SLOVAK government must take steps to ensure the complete independence of its Judicial Council, according to the concluding recommendations of the United Nations’ Committee against Torture. The findings were taken under consideration at a government meeting on May 26.
The UN committee noted that justices are appointed by the President of the Slovak Republic upon recommendations by the Judicial Council. But members of that Judicial Council are appointed and dismissed by the president and the government, the TASR newswire reported, lessening their independence.
The report also covered unequal treatment of Roma citizens among its 16 recommendations, referring to reports on mistreatment of Roma detained by the police as well as the high percentage of Roma children in schools for those with with mental disabilities.
