SLOVAKIA should ensure complete independence of its Judicial Council in order to make sure the country’s judiciary is independent, according to the concluding recommendations of the United Nations’ Committee against Torture, which the government discussed today.
The UN committee noted that the justices are appointed by the President of the Republic according to a recommendation of the Judicial Council, while some of the council’s members are appointed and dismissed by the president and the government, the TASR newswire reported.
The report also mentions treatment of Roma citizens among its 16 recommendations for the Slovak government, referring to media reports on mistreatment of detained Roma by the police. The report also criticised the high percentage of Roma children placed in schools for children with mental disabilities.
