During a meeting with Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák in New York on November 20, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Slovakia's activities in the area of UN security reform, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's spokesman, Peter Stano, told the TASR newswire.
Ban expressed appreciation for the efforts made by Slovak diplomats to co-ordinate the activities of the international community in post-conflict areas. Slovak diplomacy has been working in this area at the request of the UN Secretary-General since the country served as a temporary member of the UN Security Council in 2006-07. Lajčák and Ban also discussed the situation in Afghanistan.
“Slovakia will support UN efforts aimed at stabilising and developing the country, mainly through our work in the ISAF mission,” said Lajčák, confirming Slovakia's plan to increase the number of its troops in the mission.
The two officials also spoke about climate change. Slovakia backs the UN chief's efforts to achieve a legally binding treaty to cut emissions at next month's UN conference in Copenhagen. Ban and Lajčák also discussed the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the amicable division of Czechoslovakia in 1993. TASR
