Unemployment down in February

THE NUMBER of the unemployed in Slovakia dropped in February in monthly as well as annual terms, as a result of lower figure of new unemployed registered by the labour offices and stable number of new-found jobs on the market. The labour offices also reported the increase in empty positions, the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR) said on March 20.

The unemployment rate stood at 13.49 percent in February, down from January’s 13.61 percent. In annual terms, the jobless rate dropped by 1.22 percentage points.

The number of jobless ready to take job immediately stood at 364,099 in February, which was by 3,122 (or 0.82 percent) less than month before. Compared to February 2013, their number fell by 32,971 people (or 8.28 percent).

The total number of the unemployed was 401,876, or 14.89 percent, in February. In monthly terms their number dropped by 248 people (0.06 percent), while in annual terms the number fell by 35,217 people (8.06 percent).

Together five regions (Trenčín, Nitra, Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Košice) reported a month-on-month decrease in the number of jobless. The highest drop at 0.28 percentage points occurred in Banská Bystrica Region. Bratislava and Trnava Regions saw the unemployment rise in February. In Žilina the jobless rate remained stable.
