THE TRADE union’s congress rejected a proposal by union management that the organisation cooperate with Smer, the daily SME wrote.
A majority in congress voted against the strategic cooperation with the opposition party, saying that the move could alienate other political parties.
Silvia Glenová, a spokesperson for Smer, said the trade union was threatened and blackmailed by the government.
Economy Minister Pavol Rusko warned the trade union November 12 that he would propose suspending dialogue between the government and the union if the union’s congress approved a resolution on cooperating with Smer.
Labour Minister Ludovit Kanik seconded Rusko’s disapproval, stating that union cooperation with Smer would be akin to signing an obituary on standard trade union policy.
