FOUR eastern Slovak universities and one from central Slovakia declared strike alert due to the announced introduction of tuition fees for university studies, the TASR news wire wrote.
The strike alert was launched at the Technical University in Košice, the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik (UPJS), the Veterinary Medicine University in Košice, Prešov University, and Žilina University - encompassing about 30,000 students.
The students are ready to take further steps and measures leading towards a strike if the law on student loans, which also introduces tuition fees, is approved in parliament in March.
According to university students, the loans for the tuition would increase the already inadequate cost of studies for students from socially weak backgrounds.
Today, the average monthly cost of studies is about Sk5,000 (€123), and this would increase by a further Sk1,000 (€25) if tuition fees were introduced.
