SOVIET Warsaw Pact forces killed at least 19 Slovak citizens and injured scores more when they invaded the former Czechoslovakia on August 20, 1968, according to the National Memory Institute (ÚPN), which published the victims' names on its website to mark the 37th anniversary of the occupation.

The institute is proposing that the Slovak president bestow a special honour, such as the Ľudovít Štúr Order or the Milan Rastislav Štefánik Cross, on the victims of the occupation, the TASR news agency reported.

In the coming months, the ÚPN plans to focus on those people responsible for repression in Czechoslovakia during the so-called "normalization period" after 1969.
