On September 24, Slovakia’s National Memory Institute (ÚPN) published on its webpage, www.upn.gov.sk, the names of 235 internal employees of the main administration of the former communist secret service, the ŠtB, the SITA newswire wrote.
The chairman of the board the ÚPN, Ivan Petranský, told a press conference that this was a further step towards mapping the organisational structure and staff of the ŠtB departments in Slovakia in the so-called “normalisation period” of the communist era. He also explained that the main administration of the ŠtB, based in the Slovak Interior Ministry, was the managing, controlling, coordinating, and in some spheres also the executive body of the whole ŠtB in Slovakia.
Between 1969 and 1974, it made counter-intelligence activities in consulates of capitalist countries and in Slovak bodies, followed representatives of the right political wing and led and administered the ŠtB organisations in Slovakia. Jerguš Sivoš of the documentation section of the ÚPN told the SITA newswire that on of the tasks of the main administration was to monitor people sacked from the communist party, specifically Alexander Dubček.
