The Upper Nitra Mines / Hornonitrianske bane in Prievidza (Trenčín Region) has made significant progress in introducing green schemes, such as carrying out energy audits, overhauling outdated boiler rooms, and introducing the use of underground thermal water for operating a fish farm, Upper Nitra Mines spokesperson Adriana Siváková told the TASR newswire on Tuesday, October 23.
The mining company delivered this statement in response to a protest against coal mining in the Upper Nitra region staged by Greenpeace the day before. Greenpeace flew a blimp directly over the area with a banner stating: 'If you're reading this, you're breathing pollution from coal'. Activists stated that the government is supporting an industry that would not be able to survive without state subsidies, and it is only a matter of time before it ceases to exist. "We're carrying out all our business activities with regard to preserving the environment for future generations. We view the revitalisation of areas affected by mining as a natural process in ending the use of the coalfield. We spent €478,000 on revitalising coalfields in 2009-11," concluded Siváková.
