A total of 185,445 people received social benefits for the poor in March, an increase of around 200 since the beginning of 2012, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) announced on Monday, May 7.
The highest number of recipients of social benefits for the poor was in Košice Region - 42,549; followed by Banská Bystrica Region - 35,823; Prešov Region - 34,145; Nitra Region - 26,246; Žilina Region - 16,508; Trnava Region - 13,035; and Trenčín Region - 12,277. The lowest number was found in Slovakia's wealthiest region, Bratislava, with only 4,862, the TASR newswire quoted ÚPSVaR as saying. When those who are dependent on benefit recipients (i.e. their children) are included in the figures, the number of people dependent on social benefits for the poor totalled 363,010, or 6.71 percent of Slovakia's population.
