US Ambassador to Slovakia Rodolphe Vallee says that if the new EU member states decide to introduce a visa duty towards US citizens traveling to their countries, it would complicate the existing “road map”, which is a set of criteria that countries must fulfill in order to become part of the visa-free travel regime to the US.

"I think the path we have laid out is a good one. It includes concrete and specific steps towards helping Slovaks to travel to the United States without visas," Vallee said during a visit to Košice on September 27.

"However, the process is sometimes misunderstood. As many as 85 percent of Slovaks applying for visas to the United States get 10-year visas. Our goal is that Slovaks and Americans be able to travel without visas," Vallee said.

However, the ambassador was not able to say when the visa duty for Slovaks might be canceled.
