The Washington Times newspaper has written that US Ambassador to Slovakia Ronald Weiser has refused to meet former Slovak Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar. The embassy has neither confirmed nor denied the report.“It was a real cold shower for us,” the paper quoted Mečiar’s colleague Rudolf Žiak as saying. Žiak, former director of counterintelligence with the Slovak secret service, is vice-chairman of Mečiar’s HZDS party.Western diplomats, especially US officials, have said repeatedly that Slovakia’s chances of entering Nato and the EU could be dashed if the autocratic Mečiar returns to power after September elections.Compiled by Tom Nicholson from press reports.
