A GROUP of US diplomats appreciated the approach of three primary schools in eastern Slovakia to integrate Roma children in the area of education. Representatives from US embassies to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Serbia paid a visit to schools in Šarišské Michaľany, Petrovany (both in Prešov Region) and Veľká Ida (Košice Region) on October 25.
“I think that the impression we all shared was quite positive,” said Jamal Al-Mussawi, first secretary/political officer of the US Embassy to Slovakia, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “These schools employ different methods to ensure that all students, regardless of their ethnic origin and level of education, could receive their education together in one classroom and learn from each other. We observed three different schools with three different methods aimed to make students work together and each method seems to be quite efficient.”
Al-Mussawi added that the approach and experience of the three schools could be used by other schools in Slovakia as well as in other countries.
Diplomats came to eastern Slovakia to learn more about the situation regarding the integration of Roma into the majority society in education, and to exchange experiences from countries where they serve. On October 24, they met with several NGOs that deal with Roma issues, TASR wrote.
