THE TRIAL of Mikuláš Vareha, nicknamed the Lord of Zemplín, is taking place in prison due to Vareha’s health condition.
Vareha was transported to the Banská Bystrica prison on January 10 from the prison hospital in Trenčín, where he was treated after falling ill in early December 2013.
Vareha, who was allegedly diagnosed with diabetes, is under continuous surveillance by doctors. The judge halted the hearing in order for doctors to administer Vareha’s insulin shots, the SITA newswire reported.
The businessman is connected with the biggest case of tax fraud in Slovakia’s history.
The Specialised Penal Court in Banská Bystrica cancelled the scheduled court sessions after he became ill, and ordered the trial to take place before January 24.
The new hearing was scheduled for the purpose of providing more evidence, as requested by the Supreme Court, which cancelled the original verdict from April 2013 that sent Vareha to prison for 11 years for tax evasion. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of €100,000.
Vareha’s legal prison term expired on March 1, 2014. If the courts fail to conclude his case by then, he will be released from prison.
