VAT for restaurants might be lowered

Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that the value added tax (VAT) for Slovak restaurants might be lowered. He made the statement at the meeting of the parliamentary committee for European Affairs in a reaction to a similar measure that was proposed by France at the meeting of the EU’s Ecofin Council.

“Slovakia supported this proposal of France,” Fico said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “If Slovakia can manage economically and financially, I am ready to go ahead here.”

Fico is convinced that restaurants will suffer heavily from the economic crisis since they are losing their customers. The proposal also corresponds with the government’s philosophy to lower VAT every time that the economic situation makes it possible, TASR reported Fico as saying. (TASR)
