SOBLAHOV, a tiny village in western Slovakia's Trenčín region, is competing for the title of the most beautiful European village.
Recently announced as Slovakia's village of the year, Soblahov is one of 33 competing villages and the first ever Slovak settlement to enter the competition.
The results are due to be announced in November. Mayor Miroslav Duraci said European Commissioners who recently visited the village had been impressed particularly with local water resources and environmental protection.
Ten years ago the village launched a renewal programme to create a healthy living environment. Old buildings showing traditional village architecture were renovated, and a cycling path was created connecting Soblahov with Trenčín and six other surrounding villages.
