IN AN OPEN letter to British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia expressed their disagreement with a proposal from Blair to make cuts to the EU budget, since these would negatively affect the new member states, the daily SME reported.
The prime ministers of the Visegrad 4 countries are taking a joint approach over the issue and warned Blair that if the December summit of the EU does not end in an agreement on the 2007 to 2013 budget, trust in the EU’s ability to further enlarge will be undermined.
The prime ministers stressed that the principle of solidarity is the basic pillar of the union.
Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány already announced that Blair's budget proposal is not acceptable for Hungary.
