The jury at the Cannes film festival awarded the Slovak animated film Pandas directed by Matúš Vizár. The movie placed third in the Cinéfondation section, the competition of short and medium-length films made by students, with an award of €7,500, the SITA newswire reported on May 24.
“It is the whole mixture of feelings, joy, satisfaction, it can be named with difficulties,” Vizár, who also works for the Sme daily, told Czech internet portal iDnes.cz.
Vizár said that the success of Pandas is that they are different from the other films. Except for the direction, Vizár also wrote the screenplay and did the illustration. According to him, it was not easy to make this film, and that also other people helped him with its preparation.
“The production lasted more than two years, some haters even say it was longer,” Vizár said, as quoted by SITA, adding that the basic idea of this film is that pandas want to end their life misery, but people try to save them against their will. “In short, it is a satiric view on anything possible, even on the big question of the sense of living.”
Pandas will be screened also at various other film festivals, including French Annecy or Fest Anča in Žilina, SITA wrote.
