THE LABOUR union at Volkswagen (VW) Slovakia, the country's top manufacturing producer and exporter, has called for a strike as of today in an effort to negotiate better wages for the plant's employees in the collective agreement for 2005.
The head of the labour union committee, Ján Jankovič, told the Pravda daily that after 60 days of talks the union and management had failed to reach agreement on several sections of the collective agreement.
The average wage in VW Slovakia is Sk26,000 (€650), as opposed to the national average of Sk15,000 (€375). The VW labour union is demanding higher bonuses for its workers.
Further negotiations are due to take place soon.
