Volkswagen to restart production, says union leader

Volkswagen's car plant in Bratislava was due to re-launch production on Wednesday, February 25, at 06:00, according to the plant's trade union leader Zoroslav Smolinský.

Volkswagen's car plant in Bratislava was due to re-launch production on Wednesday, February 25, at 06:00, according to the plant's trade union leader Zoroslav Smolinský.

Smolinský told the TASR newswire: “Union representatives are monitoring the situation in the plant and the preparation for the re-launch.”

Production at the car plant was halted on February 16 for a company holiday, during which employees have taken days off that they had not used in 2008. All employees have been receiving 100 percent of their wages during the company holiday.

Volkswagen Slovakia, frequently Slovakia’s top exporter in the past, was founded in 1991 as a joint project of BAZ and Volkswagen AG. It produces cars, gear-boxes and components for gear-boxes in its facilities in Bratislava and Martin (Žilina region). TASR
