Preparation for Saturday’s balloting in Nižná Myšľa was not affected by last weekend’s floods and extensive landslides that hit the village, nearby Košice.
Early in the morning the first voters came to cast their ballots at the polling station established in the community building in the village, where only one week ago dozens of persons evacuated from their homes sought shelter. More than 40 family houses were damaged by the landslides in the village last weekend.
Adriana Lešková, the head of the precinct election commission expects that voter turnout in the village might be affected by the ongoing cleanup work, but also said she believes the recent events could inspire the residents to mobilise and attend the election even more so.
“We came to vote with the family, even though we are still working hard cleaning the house and there is a lot of work to be done,” said a 28-year-old resident of the village, Gabriela, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “We expect the new government to help our village, so that it doesn’t vanish and people do not move away because of the recent events.”
