President Ivan Gašparovič called on all citizens of Slovakia to take part in Saturday’s parliamentary election before the polls close at 22:00.
“I wish the elections really bring a result which will help Slovakia in the future,” Gašparovič said, as quoted by the SITA newswire after he cast his ballot. “And I greatly honour people who will come to polling stations today. Because it is necessary that we all cast our ballots today for those whom we trust and about whom we are convinced that they will advocate what we all need: content life in a democratic country.”
Gašparovič did not have any doubts about which party he will cast a ballot.
“I feel socially, I think nationally,” SITA quoted him as saying. “It is my credo and I voted for such parties or such party.”
According to President Gašparovič, Slovakia does not stand on a major historic crossroads in this election as all political parties acknowledge the country’s orientation towards the European Union and NATO.
“We are on the path that we will definitively not abandon,” he remarked, as reported by SITA.
The president also said he was disgusted with the pre-election campaign, saying that what prevailed in it was lying to people and disparaging citizens.
