The Slovak National Party (SNS) would have no problem backing a two-party governing coalition composed of Smer and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), SNS chair Ján Slota told the TASR newswire after a meeting with President Ivan Gašparovič on June 16.
Slota stressed that his only priority was to ensure that what he called the “Hungarian party”, i.e. Most-Híd, is not part of the next cabinet.
The SNS leader said that he believed a coalition of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the KDH and Most-Híd would be controversial in its substance, and that therefore the parties will not be able to form a government.
“Only death is certain,” said Slota, commenting on a declaration by the four parties not to co-operate with Smer, even though it came first in the election.
Slota confirmed that he has received no invitation from Smer chief Robert Fico for official talks on forming a governing coalition, but said that “certain talks are going on intensely”.
