THE EIGHT regional capitals of Slovakia witnessed several changes in their municipal leadership in November 15 municipal elections. According to the unofficial results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office, after votes from 2,922 of the 2,923 towns and villages have been counted, the Slovak capital will get a new mayor: Ivan Nesrovnal, who ran as independent. Current mayor Milan Ftáčnik, who ran as an independent candidate with the support of the ruling Smer party, finished second.
In Košice, Richard Raši, the candidate of Smer is leading the race finishing ahead of Rudolf Bauer, the candidate of the wide rightist coalition the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), NOVA, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Party of Hungarian Community (SMK), the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS), the Civic Conservative Party (OKS), the Democratic Party (DS), Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO), Sieť and Most-Híd based on preliminary unofficial results.
Banská Bystrica went to Ján Nosko, the candidate of Smer, SDKÚ, the Slovak National Party (SNS) and the Party of Modern Slovakia (SMS), who picked more votes than Peter Gogola (independent).
The winner of the mayoral race in the city of Trenčín is Richard Rybníček. He defeated Tomáš Vaňo, the TASR newswire reported.
The mayor of Žilina in the next four years will be Igor Choma, according to the unofficial results.
Andrea Turčanová has picked the highest number of votes in Prešov, according to preliminary results leaving behind Pavel Hagyari.
In Trnava, Peter Bročka won the race, the unofficial results suggest.
Nitra went to Jozef Dvonč, defeating Dominika Tekeliová, the candidate of Sieť.
After votes from 2,922 of the 2,923 towns and villages have been counted, the turnout in regional elections was estimated at 48.34 percent.
Official results of the local elections are expected to be announced later on November 16.
