OVER 55,000 people signed the petition to support legislation that would ban working on Sundays, the civic association Alliance for Sunday - Slovakia, which ran the petition, announced on January 27.
The association will continue to collect signatures until July this year, with the goal of reaching 100,000 signatures, which would require parliament to deal with the issue, association head Anton Čulen said, as reported by the SITA newswire.
He called on political parties and Christian churches to support the idea of free Sundays and claimed that former Eastern Bloc countries lag behind western Europe in this area, as in the west most countries have laws that prohibit working on Sundays. The professions that would be most affected by such legislation in Slovakia would be construction, retail and big shopping malls.
