Today, May 8, which is a public holiday in Slovakia, the capital will turn back the clock 68 years as locals as well as visitors are offered the spectacle of re-enactments of the battles to liberate the city at the end of World War II. The main re-enactment takes place in downtown Bratislava between 14:00 and 16:00.
In co-operation with the Club of Military History Carpathia, the City of Bratislava has organised an event called Bratislava 2013 – Boje v meste 1945 (Fights in the City). “The re-enactment will take place in Jesenského Street; and part of it will be a parade of period military equipment in Primaciálne Square,” city spokesperson Daniela Rodinová told the Sme daily. Fights will also flare in front of the Slovak National Theatre in Hviezdoslavovo Square. A historical tram will pass through the city centre, while regular lines will cease to run between 13:00 and 17:00 along Mostová and Jesenského streets, Sme reported.
