SLOVAK MEP Anna Záborská, of the Christian Democratic party, was elected to lead the European Parliament's committee for women's rights and gender equality despite opposition from the parliament's socialists, who had blocked her election last week.

Záborská took the job with 15 of 35 votes. The socialists did not take part in the secret ballot, the SME daily wrote.

Her opponents said they boycotted the vote in protest of Záborská's conservative opinions. After her election, however, Záborská said she did not intend to use the committee to pursue Christian Democrat policies.

In Slovakia Záborská represents traditional Christian opinions. She made headlines in the past by saying that homosexuals should not be teachers because they could have a bad influence on students.
