The local election commission in Košice announced on October 23 that deputy mayor Zdenko Trebula had been elected mayor of the city over five competitors. Voter turnout was extremely low, at less than 18%, the lowest turnout ever in a Košice municipal election. Trebula won by receiving votes from 11% of the city's 185,267 registered voters.
Trebula replaces former Košice mayor Rudolf Schuster, who steped down from his post after winning the Slovak presidential elections on May 29. Inauguration ceremonies for Trebula will be held on October 28.
At a post-election press conference,Trebula outlined the three most important goals he would pursue as mayor: the safety of citizens, public transport, and new housing construction.
