The regional unit of metalworkers union KOVO staged a protest in Žilina on Tuesday, November 24, against attempts by the parliamentary opposition parties to amend the Labour Code, and to voice support for legislation on collective bargaining.
“We urge the government to maintain social standards and thus keep industrial relations intact. Poor people aren't free. Those who are better off economically have more opportunities to promote democratic principles,” said KOVO council chairman Emil Machyňa at the union's national conference held in Žilina, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Highlighting another pressing problem amid the ongoing global crisis, Machyňa said that firms are using the recession as an excuse to fire people. He said the government should reinforce labour inspectorates, who could play a major role in ensuring observance of the Labour Code.
