The Smer party’s regional chief in Trnava, Renáta Zmajkovičová, is expected to take one of the four parliamentary deputy-speaker posts, the party’s vice-chairman and parliamentary speaker-in-waiting Pavol Paška said, as reported by the TASR newswire on Tuesday, March 27. Even though a meeting of Smer members will have the final say at a session on Friday, Zmajkovičová's nomination for the post should be a foregone conclusion, said Paška.
Zmajkovičová, previously head of parliament's conflicts-of-interest committee, is the second woman lined up to take up a vice-chair post after Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) nominated its MP Erika Jurinová for one of the opposition slots. Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) chairman Ján Figeľ is in the frame to take up the other opposition deputy-speaker post.
Now only Smer's second nomination for one of the four parliamentary deputy-speaker posts remains in question. "I really don't know about this one. It'll depend on the final make-up of the government and on which people with experience from parliament will leave [for government posts] and which will stay," said Paška. Unnamed sources suggest the choice is between Smer party general manager Ján Richter and former economy minister Ľubomír Jahnátek.
