SLOVAKIA's railway operator ZSSK plans to cut 1,500 of its 18,000 jobs by 2006, the state run news agency TASR reported.

As of January 1, 2005, ZSSK will be divided into two carrier companies - one for cargo and one for passanger transportation.

"The reduction of staff relates not only to the division of the company but it is also a result of transformation processes agreed upon by the Slovak government in 2000," said ZSSK spokesman Miloš Čikovský.

The newly created ZSSK-Cargo will employ 13,500 people, while the ZOD passenger transport company is expected to employ 4,500 workers.
