There was big disappointment on the face of Slovak national ice-hockey team’s coach, Vladimír Vůjtek, after they lost to Norway May 6 in Group B of the IIHF World Championships.
“It is a disappointment, but we had been asking for it for some time,” Vůjtek said. “We managed to win already the three previous matches only thanks to good play in the final part when we managed to reverse the course of the game. Then, we said we only need to start getting the upper hand, and it will be different. Today we were leading by two goals – but we had penalties, got two goals during Norwegian power play and then lost all three points of this match."
After the lost against Norway, Slovaks have complicated their way to the quarter-finals of the championship.
”The tournament does not end yet,” Vůjtek continued. “We have to collect courage, self-confidence. We have two days to rest and now we have to try surprise one of the stronger rivals. I firmly believe that the burden of the favourite will now fade away. We have not managed the first matches in good form, we barely struggled. We did not play good hockey.”
On May 6, Slovaks lost 2:3 against Norway; in the previous matches, they beat Denmark (4:3, in a shootout); Belarus – Slovakia (1:2, in overtime) and Slovenia (3:1).
“We cannot make many more changes,“ Vůjtek commented. “We have 22 players and today, we may have lost one back for the next match,” said coach about the penalty for Andrej Meszároš in the duel with Norway, which may get him a suspension.
