The Gotická Cesta (Gothic Route) non-governmental organisation is changing the concept of its Gothic Route Open after many years. During the traditional event, scheduled for August 10, mediaeval churches in the Gemer-Malohont region in south-eastern Slovakia will become accessible to the public. This year, it also wants to focus on little-known sacral monuments from other periods, so the event will now be called Forgotten Heritage, Peter Palgut of Gotická Cesta said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

“After seven years of the Gothic Route Open event, when we tried to mainly highlight the biggest jewels in the region, we want to start a new era with Forgotten Heritage and focus on other monuments that deserve public attention,” Palgut said.

In the past, the event offered visitors the opportunity to look into the interiors of mediaeval churches in the Gemer-Malohont region. Thanks to its European Heritage Label, awarded to 12 churches with Gothic frescoes in 2022, the organisation, in cooperation with the Banská Bystrica and Košice Self-Governing Regions, managed to introduce stable opening hours at the churches. Now it is changing the concept and wants to draw the public’s attention to other locations within the region.

“We want to focus on monuments that may not be explicitly mediaeval in nature, but are still sacred and especially endangered, telling a deeper story about the whole region,” said Palgut. “In the future, we would also like to develop the concept by highlighting the individual crafts used in the restoration of monuments.”

Gothic Route: Forgotten Heritage will take place on August 10 and introduce visitors to little-known churches in the villages of Zacharovce, Brádno, Hostišovce and Kesovce. Apart from the Gothic church in Zacharovce, all were built in the 18th and 19th centuries.

“Despite the fact that they are younger, they are in very bad condition, and some are in ruins,” Palgut said.
