And in winter especially you can experience an adrenaline rush in the more demanding Horné Diery section, where everything is covered in snow and ice, and water rushes through narrow spaces right under your feet.

The Jánošíkove Diery are beautiful in every season, but in winter in particular they offer a unique experience.

The how and what of the hike

As mentioned, the system of gorges is located in the Malá Fatra mountain range in northern Slovakia, near the village of Terchová. To get there from Bratislava you can hop on the 05:27 express train, get out at Žilina two hours later, walk to the nearby main bus station and take the 08:00 bus to the 'Terchová, Centrum' bus stop.

Once there, you can either wait for a connecting bus to Biely Potok – or just walk there yourself. It's not far, and if you walk briskly you will likely get there sooner.
