For decades, the Slovak town of Liptovský Mikuláš – despite owning the largest stretch of shoreline along the Liptovská Mara reservoir – lacked a public beach. That changed in late June, just in time to mark the reservoir’s 50th anniversary.
The new municipal beach, located in the Palúdzka district, spans 700 metres and covers 5,000 square metres. Designed for swimmers of all ages, it features a gently sloping entry into the water, fine gravel underfoot, and a sandy section with a newly built beach volleyball court.
“Just three months ago this was an overgrown patch of wilderness,” said mayor Ján Blcháč at the opening. “Now it’s a place to unwind.”
Facilities already in place include refreshment stands, paddleboard hire, changing cabins and dry toilets. Entry is free, and a shuttle bus – dubbed the ‘beach bus’ – runs three times a day from the Podbreziny housing estate. Parking is available for up to 160 vehicles.

The beach is part of a longer-term plan to make the reservoir more accessible. Future improvements, such as a lakeside promenade, may follow if demand grows. The town hopes to reroute a nearby railway line that currently cuts the beach off from the centre.
Until now, visitors to Liptovská Mara had only two other options: a paid beach at the Liptovský Trnovec campsite, and a free beach in Liptovská Sielnica, often plagued by summer parking problems.
