The Lonely Planet travel guide has proclaimed the High Tatras as the most significant summer destination in Europe. The highest mountains in Slovkia beat well-known destinations in Spain, Iceland, Italy and France.
Joe Reville, managing director of Lonely Planet for Central Europe, symbolically handed the award to representatives of the region at Lomnický Peak.
Adventure and relax
“There’s something mythical about the landscape of Slovakia’s High Tatras, a lofty realm of crooked peaks and plunging waterfalls where snow willow blankets the ground and fearsome beasts patrol the forests,” the Lonely Planet wrote about the High Tatras.
“Eradicated from most parts of Europe, brown bears thrive in this wild, rugged region, and spotting one is easier than ever; a growing number of tour agencies lead adventurers out on foot to spy on them, walking through woods where lynx, wolves and the endemic Tatra chamois also roam,” Lonely Planet continues.
The travel guide also recommended hikes to the summit of Slovakia’s highest peak, Gerlach (also known as Gerlachovský Štít) reaching a height of 2655m, boating on the glacial lake of Štrbské Pleso, and the traditional hospitality offered by the high-altitude chaty (mountain huts). You may never want to come back down to earth.
Attracting more foreign tourists
Veronika Littvová of the Regional Organisation of Tourism High Tatras believes that this award will help to attract even more foreign tourists to the Slovak mountains.
“It is confirmation of the high-quality services and attractions we have,” she said as quoted by the TASR newswire. She believes that they will succeed in setting the visiting rules in a way that also protects nature.
The ranking Best in Europe 2019 presents Slovak destinations that are worth a visit and provides tips for gastronomy trips and places appreciated by tourists when they want to flee from the masses.
