Protected area Horná Orava plans to build an island at Oravská dam in Jelešnianska bay. However, it will not be for tourists but rather birds that don't have a place for nesting, My Orava wrote.

One bird island is already located at the largest Slovak dam, protected since 1973. Today, it belongs among the most significant nesting localities in Slovakia; almost 2,000 pairs of species of water birds live there. However, the area is quite small and the location near the recreational zone is harmful for birds, My Orava reported.

The new island should be far away from recreational zones, so no people illegally enter the island. The construction works will take place in winter, so it won’t disturb the tourists. The construction will begin in the autumn of 2019 and last until spring 2020, My Orava wrote.

The "Orava Sea" spreads across an area of 35 km. As one of the largest water reservoirs in Slovakia, it is the most visited tourist destination in Orava during the summer.

After relaxing and playing water sports, tourists may visit Slanický Island of the Art in the middle of the dam. A Baroque church with an exhibition of traditional folk art is located there. Sometimes, concerts take place there as well.
