More than 4.3 million visitors opted for a vacation somewhere in Slovakia in 2015. This represents an increase of 6 percent compared to the strongest previous year of tourism, which was 2008, and an increase of 16 percent year-on-year, the Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry reported on February 19 based on the data published by the Slovak Statistics Office.

“We can establish that these numbers give us hope that tourism in Slovakia is proceeding in the right direction,” said Transport Minister Ján Počiatek at a press conference in Bratislava as cited by the TASR newswire, adding that in terms of revenues from tourism Slovakia passed the level of €2 billion for the first time ever.

Last year was ground-breaking also for domestic tourists that decided to spend their holidays in Slovakia. Their number rose to 2.6 million, which is an increase of 13 percent compared to 2008 and of 10 percent compared to 2013.

The largest share of foreign tourists came from the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.

“However, it pleases us that people from less traditional places have started to come to Slovakia to enjoy their holidays,” added ministry state secretary František Palko. For instance, Slovakia experienced a growing number of tourists from China, Great Britain, USA, the Netherlands, Italy and France in 2015.
