The Transport Ministry approved the project in the end of 2015. The Regional Association Váh – Danube – Ipeľ will receive a total of €40,000 from the ministry for the project whose main aim is to contribute to the overall economic growth and improvement of accessibility of the region via connecting it with the Slovak part of the EuroVelo 6 route, the TASR newswire reported.

The Danube Bike Trail in Slovakia is 168 kilometres long and leads from the Berg border crossing to Štúrovo (Nitra Region), said István Domin, head of the Regional Association Váh – Danube – Ipeľ. Thanks to the existing cycling route between Kolárovo and Komárno, the new sections will be linked with EuroVelo 6.

“This will create a connection of the Važská Cycling Route and Danube Bike Trail of European importance which will create conditions for sustainable development and higher attractiveness of the region for its inhabitants, Slovak and foreign tourists, in compliance with the national strategy of the development of cycling transport and cycling tourism in Slovakia,” Domin told TASR.

The cycling route will run through the cadastral area of 11 municipalities. Nine of them will directly benefit from it, while the others will benefit from it only indirectly. They will however support the project and offered help with settling potential disputes, Domin added.
