Not far from Tisovec, a town in central Slovakia, near the route to Bánovo, a small but captivating winter spectacle unfolds each year: an icefall nestled under the railway line. Although smaller this season than in years past, it remains a charming attraction, drawing admirers and photographers alike.

What sets this icefall apart is its unusual origin—it does not form on a watercourse. Located near the popular Zbojská saddle, it is one of the region’s most-photographed winter spots.

A short distance away, heading towards Salaš Zbojská, another gem awaits: the Čertova dolina valley. Known for its striking ice formations, it is also home to the Čertova jaskyňa cave, said to have once hidden the treasure of the bandit Jakub Surovec, according to local legend.

Surrounded by folklore, the valley’s name—Devil’s Valley—evokes its eerie charm. Towering rock formations, strange sounds, and spine-chilling tales have given rise to its devilish reputation.

The valley, with its unique karst terrain, waterfalls, and massive cliffs, once proved challenging to navigate. But since 2021, thanks to a collaborative effort involving the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region and local organisations, access has been improved. New via ferratas now make the most picturesque 400-metre stretch of the nature trail safer and more accessible, inviting adventurers to explore this enchanting and storied landscape.
