Rescuers find last body in Handlová mine

Rescuers have found the last of 20 miners and fire-fighters who died in a mine explosion in Handlová (Trenčín Region) on Monday, August 10, a spokesperson for Hornonitrianske Bane (Upper-Nitra Mines) in Prievidza (also in Trenčín Region), Adriana Siváková, announced on August 12.

According to Siváková, work at the mine is continuing, with crews trying to clear the mineshaft's entrances and exits. Crews have almost reached the site of the explosion, but they are still having to deal with difficult conditions – especially high temperatures, which reached 48°C as they approached the site of the blast. She added that visibility in the Eastern Shaft is bad, and crews are wearing oxygen masks because of the continued presence of toxic gases in the tunnel.
