ACTIVISTS from the Alliance for Family claim Swedish furniture giant Ikea is harming traditional family by featuring a story of a British lesbian couple in its corporate magazine.
The story of the British family, two lesbians who are raising a son, appeared in Ikea’s Live publication, a magazine distributed free of charge to Ikea customer card holders.
“Depriving a child of its father - is that a story they want to show us?” the Alliance wrote, as quoted by the Sme daily.
The Alliance’s Anton Chromik said that he would expect Ikea to respect the culture of whatever country it does business in, pointing to Russia, where the story on the lesbian couple was not published, or Arab countries where the catalogues do not depict women, Sme wrote.
The activists are demanding that Ikea withdraw the magazine and apologise for the article, according to Sme.
The Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS) agreed with the Alliance’s initiative, Sme reported.
Ikea is not planning to apologise for the story, the company’s spokesperson Jana Hrubcova told Sme, adding that the company’s policy promotes tolerance towards everyone.
“We are trying to do everything in order to preserve equal opportunities for all, regardless of their sexual orientation, age, sex or physical skills,” Hrubcova told Sme.
