Labour unionists endorse Fico for president
The Confederation of Labour Unions (KOZ) calls upon its members to vote for Prime Minister Robert Fico in March’s presidential election, it was announced February 19.
“A social-democratic president represents, first and foremost, active protection for citizens, the guarantee of maintaining the existing standards in all walks of life, maintaining of Slovakia's stability and significant social peace,” reads the appeal of KOZ, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “That’s why we should vote for stability and certainty; vote for the social character of the state,” the KOZ statement continues.
Political analyst Grigorij Mesežnikov does not consider KOZ an independent organisation form the political point of view.
“The Confederation of Labour Unions has for years an agreement on cooperation signed with the Smer party – and from this aspect, this is a proof of a high level of politicisation,” he told the SITA newswire. He opined that a union confederation should primarily represent the social and economic interests of its members, and remain apolitical and non-partisan.
Another analyst, Ján Baránek, agreed that this step is nothing new, adding that KOZ lost its independence long ago.
