Presidential campaign begins
As of April 30, ten presidential candidates in the first ever direct presidential election in Slovakia began campaigning for the upcoming May 15 ballot. But due to the short length of the campaign and strict spending limits, Slovaks should not necessarily expect wall-to-wall campaign posters or too much visible evidence of an election.According to the presidential election law pushed through the parliament in January, the campaign will last for only 13 days and will be followed by a 48-hour long moratorium, during which any public presentation promoting the candidates will be prohibited. The election law is designed in part to minimise the need for large amounts of campaign funding which can often spell political influence for major donors. But the campaign laws are so strict that some campaign managers are claiming that the election law discriminates against the independent candidates, as it bans any media presentations for candidates before the campaign starts.
National Bank fears loss if Czechs sell off ČSOB stake
The National Bank of Slovakia is scrambling not to be left out of the sale of Czech Československá obchodná banka (ČSOB), trying to interest potential foreign investors in the central bank's stake and threatening Czech shareholders with a lawsuit to assert its rights. On April 21, the Czech government received three offers - from German Deutsche Bank, Hypovereinsbank and Belgian KBC Bank - for a 66 percent stake in ČSOB, one of the country's largest state-owned banks which is also active in the Slovak market. The Czech media have reported that the investors may be offering over $1 billion for the stake.
Ghosts, spirits and falconers haunt Bojnice festival
As spring arrives each year in the Upper Nitra Valley, Bojnice locals gear up for their biggest event - The Annual International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits. Now in its 6th year, the festival attracts visitors young, old and beyond life for events in and around Slovakia's most romantic castle. The 12th century Bojnice Castle, which was dressed up one hundred years ago to mirror the chateaux of the French Loire River Valley, floats above the trees on a hill above the small town. Its cluster of elegant round towers and spiked roofs conjure fairy tale images of knights in shining armor saving princesses from evil godmothers, or of a visit to Disneyland.
Schuster may be his own worst enemy
According to the experts, presidential candidates do not have many chances to influence the election results in a significant way by the presidential campaign. They also agree on the fact that unless Rudolf Schuster makes a crucial mistake in the coming days, he is the most likely to win the election. But it can be claimed that the hot favourite's political speeches represent the main danger for him.It seems as if Košice's mayor is the only person to whom Mečiar's comeback to the political ring is a surprise and that he is the only person who can not psychically get over it. He seems unable to get hold of his convincing, dynamic voice or the courage that was characteristic for him when founding his Party for Civic Reconciliation (SOP), when he headed for his aim despite the various hits below the belt by others. By achieving decent election results for the SOP, even though they were not as good as he might have expected, he contributed to political strength of the ruling coalition in the National Council of the Slovak Republic.
