Review: Where you're better off being a non-smoker
U FILIPA is a rarity among Slovak restaurants - a place where smokers get the rough end of the pineapple in both seating arrangements and atmosphere. The pineapple metaphor, which comes from Australia, suits U filipa restaurant's exotic menu. 'Chef's specials' include kangaroo (klokan), ostrich (pštros) and fried prawns, while the menu proper features frogs' legs appetisers, wild boar with whortleberry sauce and 'the best of flesh for two persons'.
Just this once: The ethics of state spending
IT'S STRIKING how many economic decisions are basically ethical decisions, how the whole right wing/left wing approach to the economy boils down to how much claim we have to each other's money. The Slovak government on April 24 is to debate some budget restrictions that could prevent the fiscal deficit from spiraling out of sight this year, as well as how to spend the proceeds from the sale of a 49 per cent stake in gas utility SPP.
Press council to defend public
IF THE new Press Council fulfils its mission, lengthy court trials will no longer be the only recourse Slovak citizens have if they feel injured by articles in the print media.A six-member body established in late March, the council intends to serve as a conflict mediator that will help reach out-of-court settlements. While it has no legal brief, the council does involve respected public figures such as painter Miroslav Cipár, historian Ivan Kamenec, teacher and psychologist Elena Hradiská, bishop Ivan Osuský, lawyer and human rights activist Ján Hrubala, and Pavol Demeš, head of the German Marshall Fund of the United States for Central and Eastern Europe.
ST again in hot water with Internet providers
FIXED-LINE telecoms monopoly Slovenské Telekomunikácie (ST) has rejected accusations by a civic association that it is deliberately delaying the introduction of new technology that would make Internet access cheaper and quicker.Reacting to claims from the group Internet for Everyone that it has deliberately delayed introducing DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology despite promises to do so last year, ST said the service was not yet being offered for technical reasons."Slovak Telecom is preparing to launch this service in the second half of 2002. Obviously this depends on the successful realisation of a pilot service. It is a demanding project which requires complex and precise technological preparation," the firm said in a prepared response to questions.
Justice Ministry gives up on court improvements
JUSTICE Minister Ján Čarnogurský has defended the judiciary amid growing discontent from his own prime minister at the speed of Slovak courts.Following a demand from PM Mikuláš Dzurinda for a report on the state of Slovak courts, the minister presented cabinet April 10 with a summary of the number of cases outstanding in courts and measures implemented so far that have improved judicial efficiency.Čarnogurský admitted that new legislation to speed up court processes could not be submitted now with only five months before parliamentary elections, but proposed measures for future governments to adopt.
Top Pick: Mirror of the spirit
THIRTY years ago, after one of his parents had suffered a serious accident, Renato Meneghetti was forced to look at many x-ray images. The over-exposed photographs of bones and tissue fed on the artist's imagination for six months, until he finally started to see rivers, mountains and suns in the images."I can see Niagara Falls, the Sahara Desert or the Nile River in x-ray images. You can see many natural motifs inside each body if you are prepared to find them there," says Meneghetti, 55, the first artist ever to investigate the spiritual aspects of the human body through x-rays and other medical scans.
